What is the box scheme?

The weekly box scheme is a way of getting fresh produce from us, the grower, to you, the consumer, with the minimum of time between harvesting and eating, and with reduced transportation. We offer both a vegetable box and a fruit box. The vegetable box consists of produce, the majority of which we have grown at Leigh Court Organic Farm. Much of the fruit consists of bought in produce which we try to source as locally as possible. In season we supply as much fruit as possible from our walled garden and fruit orchard.

The Vegetable Box

What vegetables will you get in your box? In any one week you will receive at least 7 to 8 different vegetables in your box. The variety of vegetables you receive will vary with the seasons: during autumn and winter, potatoes, carrots and onions will be a staple part of your box, whereas during the warmer months you will find lettuce, cucumbers and tomatoes appearing frequently in your box. We will try to provide you with as much variety as possible.

How much is the box?

We offer two sizes of Vegetable Box - £8.50 with 8 different kinds of veg, and £17 with a minimum of 12 varieties of veg.

We also offer a £12 mixed Fruit and Veg Box which has 3 fruit items and 7 veg items.

Our recent findings indicate that our vegetables are on average 20% cheaper and our fruit was 30% cheaper than prices charged for organic produce in Supermarkets and specialist organic outlets.

Will you get enough vegetables?

We have found over the past couple of years that a £8.50 box is sufficient for 2 - 3 of people and the larger, £17 box, is a good size for a household of 4 - 5 people. Our £12 mixed box is suited to 2 - 3 people.

The Fruit Bag

What fruit will you get in your bag? You will receive a selection of 5 - 6 different types of fruit. Apples and oranges will appear regularly but we try to vary the bag by including soft fruit from our walled garden such as raspberries and blackcurrants.

Where will the fruit come from?

We will try our best to source the fruit locally. However, much of it will come from abroad, especially during the winter months. No imported produce is air freighted.

How much is the bag?

We only offer one size of fruit bag, which costs £8.50. You are free to receive more than one.

How do you get your vegetable box or fruit bag?

To collect your produce, you should go each Thursday between 4.30p.m. and 6.30p.m to your nearest collection point. We ask that you please, please return the previous week's box so we can fill it again.

Why can’t we sell the vegetable boxes as organically grown?

We are in the process of converting our land at Tytnesfield to organic production but Soil Association regulations require that land must be farmed organically for at least two years before produce grown on it may be called organic.

All of our vegetables come from our certified fields, our fields in organic conversion or from other certified organic sources.

How do you pay?

We offer a range of ways to pay, ideally monthly in advance by cheque, or weekly by cash.

What if you forget to collect your box?

First of all, please don't. However, if you do we will keep your box outside the packing shed at Leigh Court Farm until Monday morning. After this time we will donate what is salvageable to the Salvation Army, and what is rotting will find its way to the compost pile. You can pay for the box the following Thursday. You will be asked to pay for your forgotten box unless you gave us three days notice of cancellation.

What if you wish to cancel for a week or go on holiday?

Please let us know at least 3 days in advance if you don't want a box in any particular week. Obviously, if you can arrange for a friend to have your box that week it would help us a great deal.

What if you don't like certain vegetables?

We allow three dislikes per household for which we will try to substitute a different vegetable or increase the amount of other items. (Not available for the fruit box).

Will the scheme operate all year round?

Essentially yes although we stop each year for two weeks over the Christmas period. We also offer our customers the opportunity to order a double box in the week immediately prior to Christmas.

What Else?

If you have any queries, complaints, compliments or suggestions please let us know. We enjoy meeting and chatting with our customers and hope that we can continue a two way flow of communication.

If you would like to visit the farm there are several open days each year for which we give advance notice.

If you are interested in learning more about organic growing we very much welcome volunteers at any time of the year to help us. We can offer lashings of tea in return!.

We hope to see you soon,
